The following information should be referenced for planning purposes only. Although certain visas can only be completed and processed through one of JRE’s partner groups, our team of immigration professionals is currently ready to assist you with the following visa types:

  • Tourist Visa (L)

    Issued to those who intend to go to China for touring and sightseeing. Proof of travel such as flight confirmation and hotel reservation are required. Single-entry, double-entry or multiple-entry are all available for tourists. The duration of stay (each visit) normally is 30-60 days. Multiple-entry up to 10 years is issued to US passport holder

    You Need:

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Hotel Reservations: Copy of hotel reservations (Applicant's name must be on Hotel Reservation)
    • Itinerary: A confirmed reservation record of your round-trip flight to/from China. An e-ticket or print-out from a travel agency, airline or travel website is acceptable. The print-out should include: 
    • The invitation letter:
      • Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
      • Information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, etc.)
      • Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)
      • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • Tourist invitation: If your travel is being organized by a tour group in China, an official signed and stamped Invitation Letter for Tourist issued by Duly Authorized Tourism Unit in China can be used in place of the hotel reservation.

    If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page.

    If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)

  • Business Visa (M)

    Business M visa is issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities. M Visa is usually issued for single-entry, double-entry or multiple-entry. M visa can be issued up to 10 years. The duration of stay (each visit) is normally 30-60 days based on particular Chinese Consulate.

    You need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas: (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • Business letter: A business letter from the sending company in your country. The letter should be printed on the company letterhead stationery, addressed to "The Consulate of China, Visa Section", and signed by a senior manager (an equivalent to Vice-President or above). The business letter must adhere to the following guidelines:
      • Briefly introduce the applicant (please specify employment status/position held in the company by applicant).
      • State the nature of the business to be conducted (ie. business meetings, contract negotiations, etc.) and the names and addresses of companies to be contacted in China.
      • Specify the Type and desired Validity of the visa (ie. a one year multiple entry business visa).
      • Guarantee of sufficient funds for travel.
    • F.Business invitation: A business invitation letter from the sponsoring company in China. The letter should be printed on company letterhead stationery, addressed to "The Consulate of China, Visa Section", and signed by a senior manager (an equivalent to Vice-President or above) and stamped with the company seal. The business letter must include the following information:
      • Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
      • Information on the planned visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)
      • Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)
      • Who will pay the costs of the applicant's accommodations in China.
  • Non-Commerce Visa (F)

    F visa had been used as business visa before M visa was introduced. F visa is now changed for noncommercial visit. F visa is issued to those who intend to go to China for research, lecture, scientific, cultural exchange and study tour. F visa (for non-trade or non-commerce) is normally issued for single or double entry only. The duration of stay (each visit) is normally 30-90 days.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas: (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship).
    • Invitation letter: issued by a relevant entity or individual in China.
      • The invitation should contain
      • Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
      • Information on the planned visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)
      • Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)  
  • Work Visa (Z)

    Issued to those who have obtained employment to work in China. A government issued working permit or employment license is required. Z visa is issued for single-entry only. Holders of Z Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of entry, register and apply for the residence permit in Public Security Bureau (police station). Residence permit is good for multiple entry. Z visa is also issued to people conducting commercial performance in China.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status: You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Employment Permit: Original foreign employment permit and Invitation letter; if your intended work period is 90 days or less, you need to provide an Approval of Short-Term Employment for Foreigners Working in P.R. China. You must apply for your visa before the commencing work date indicated on the Approval and you will be allowed to work only within the period of time indicated in the Approval.
    • Foreign Experts License: Working in China issued by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts
    • Invitation Letter: An Original Invitation Letter by a Duly Authorized Unit. This is a special invitation that the host company in China needs to obtain from a local government agency.
  • Study Visa (X1/X2)

    Issued to those who have been admitted by a Chinese college. Student Visa is sub-divided into X1 and X2. X1 is issued to foreign students who come to China for study for more than 6 months. X2 is issued to those who come to China with same purpose but for a period of less than 6 months. X2 visa is issued for single-entry only. X1 visa can be issued for multiple entry with validity up to 5 years.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status: You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Invitation letter:Original and photocopy of the Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China
    • Foreign Experts License: Working in China issued by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts
    • Study Application: Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202)
  • Private Visa (S1, Long Term)

    Issued to those who intend to go to China to live with the immediate family member working or studying in China, or to those who intend to go to China for other private affairs. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days. "Immediate family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18 or parents-in-law. Original proof of kinship is required. S1 visa is issued for single-entry only. Holders of S1 visa shall, within 30 days from the date of entry, register and apply for the residence permit in Public Security Bureau (police station). Residence permit is good for multiple entry.

    You Need

    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Invitation letter:An invitation letter from the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies) which contains.
      • Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
      • Information on the visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place of intended residence, relations between the applicant and the inviting individual, financial source for expenditures, etc.)
      • Information on the inviting individual (name, contact telephone number, address, signature, etc.)
    • A photocopy of the inviting individual's passport and residence permit
    • Copy of the Certificate: Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of immediate family members between applicants and inviting individual. ("Immediate family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18, parents-in-law)
  • Private Visa (S2, Short Term)

    Issued to those who intend to visit their family members who are foreigners working or studying in China, or to those who intend to go to China for other private matters such as visiting friends, divorce, inheritance, adoption, marriage or medical services. The intended duration of stay in China is normally granted as 30 - 90 days per visit. Proof of kinship is required for visiting family members. S2 visa is usually issued for multiple-entry. Multiple-entry up to 10 years is only issued to US passport holder.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Visiting family members for a short period, the following documents are required
      • An invitation letter: issued by the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies) which contains: Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.) ; Information on the visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting individual, financial source for expenditures, etc.) ; Information on the inviting individual (name, contact telephone number, address, signature, etc.)
      • A photocopy of the inviting individual's passport and residence permit (a foreigner who stays or lives in China for work or studies)
      • Photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between the applicant and the inviting individual. ("Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.)
    • Private Affairs:For private affairs, documentation identifying the nature of the private affairs should be provided as required by the consular officer
  • Family Visa (Q1, Long Term)

    Q1 visa is designed for Chinese descendants or foreigners who are spouses of Chinese citizens. Issued to those who are family members of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinese permanent residence and intend to go to China for family reunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purpose of foster care. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days. "Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law. Original proof of kinship is required. Interview may be required. Q1 visa is issued for single-entry only. Holders of Q1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of entry, register and apply for the residence permit in Public Security Bureau (police station). Residence permit is good for multiple entry.

    You Need

    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying
    • For family reunion:
      • An invitation letter: issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China. The invitation letter should contain
      • Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
      • Information on the visit ( purpose of visit, intended arrival date, place(s) of intended residence, intended duration of residence, arrival and departure dates, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)
      • Information on the inviting individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of legal representative or the inviting individual, etc.)
      • Photocopy of the ID: Photocopy of Chinese ID of the inviting individual or foreign passport and permanent residence permit.
      • Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between applicant and inviting individual. ("Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.)
    • For foster care:
      • Notarization Documents: Foster entrustment notarization issued by Chinese Embassies/Consulates General in foreign countries or Foster Care Power of Attorney notarized and authenticated in the country of residence or in China
      • Other Documents: Original and photocopy of the consignor's passport(s), as well as the original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) notarized and authenticated certification showing the relationship between parents or guardians and children.
      • Foster care Letter: A letter of consent on foster care issued by the trustee living in China who has agreed to provide foster care services and a photocopy of the ID of the trustee.
      • Residence certificate: A photocopy of the certificate indicating the permanent residence status abroad of the parent(s) when the child was born, provided that either or both parents of the child are Chinese citizens.
  • Family Visa (Q2, Short Term)

    Q2 visa is designed for Chinese descendants or foreigners who are spouses of Chinese citizens. Issued to those with the intention of visiting their relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with permanent residence status in China. The intended duration of stay in China is normally granted up to 120 days per visit. Q2 visa is usually issued for multiple-entry. Multiple-entry up to 10 years is only issued to US passport holder.

    You Need

    • Invitation Letter:An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China. The invitation letter should contain:
      • Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
      • Information on the visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting individual, financial source for expenditures)
      • Information on the inviting individual (name, contact number, address, signature etc.)
      • Photocopy of the ID: Photocopy of Chinese ID of the inviting individual or foreign passport and permanent residence permit
  • Crew Visa (C)

    Issued to foreign crew members utilizing means of international transportation including: aircraft, trains, ships, and motor vehicle drivers engaged in cross-border transport activities. Also issued to accompanying family members of crew members. Multiple-entry up to 5 years is only issued to US passport holder.

    • Provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page
    • If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)
    • Guarantee or Invitation letter A letter of guarantee issued by a foreign transport company or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity in China
  • Group Visa

    Group Visa is a particular type of visa that issued to a tourist group which comprises at least five (5) members who must travel together in China. Group Visa is issued as a separate sheet instead of on the individual passport. One Official Visa Notification Letter from any head office of the China Travel Service (CTS), China International Travel Service (CITS), or China Youth Travel Service (CYTS), or Chinese National Tourism Bureau is required.

  • Transit Visa (G)

    Issued to those who intend to transit through China

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport:Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • Applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page.
    • If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)
    • An onward air (train or ship) ticket with confirmed date and seat to the destination country or region.
  • High Talent (R)

    For those individuals that are identified to be High-level talents by Chinese Government, Shanghai talent authority or have Shanghai Scientific & Technological Innovation Occupation

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport:Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page
    • If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)
    • The applicant should submit relevant certification in accordance with relevant regulations, and meet the relevant requirements of the competent authorities of the Chinese government on high-level talents and individuals with special skills urgently needed by China.
  • Journalist Short term (J1)

    Issued to resident foreign journalists of foreign news organizations stationed in China. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport:Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page
    • If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)
    • Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and an official letter issued by the media organization for which the journalist works.
    • Applicants should contact the press office of the Chinese Embassy/Consulate General in advance and complete relevant formalities
  • Journalist Long term (J2)

    Issued to foreign journalists who intend to go to China for short-term news coverage. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport:Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
    • If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page
    • If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)
    • Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and an official letter issued by the media organization for which the journalist works
    • Applicants should contact the press office of the Chinese Embassy/Consulate General in advance and complete relevant formalities
  • Permanent residence Visa (D)

    Issued to those who intend to reside in China permanently.

    You Need

    • Chinese Visa Application Form (Form V.2013): Complete the Visa Application Form
    • Passport Size Photo: The photos need to meet the requirements
    • Passport:Original passport valid for at least six months with at least 3 blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
    • Proof of legal stay or residence status:You must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
    • Visa Application:One completed Visa Application Form with a photo on glossy photo paper glued onto the form (your photo must meet the requirements).
    • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)

NOTE:

  • The applicant should guarantee that all information provided in the application is true and correct. Any false, misleading or incomplete information may result in denial of the visa or refusal of entry into China.
  • An applicant may be required to submit an original invitation, provide other supporting documents, or schedule an interview with the consular officer.
  • The consular officer will make decisions on whether or not to grant a visa and allowed validity, duration of stay and number of entries based on individual application.
  • A holder of category D visa must apply for a residence permit at the local public security authorities within 30 days of entry into China.
